Del Mar Dog Beach

Ruby loves the beach. She likes to dig in the sand and splash in the water. Fortunately, there are a number of dog-friendly beaches in the San Diego area. A recent article discussed a few of the more popular sites: https://www.nbcsandiego.com/clear-the-shelters/san-diego-county-dog-friendly-beaches/3884868/. The leash laws vary from beach to beach and season to season. It’s always wise to double-check the current regulations before embarking on an excursion to the beach because the fines can be expensive.

Ocean Beach claims to be the original Dog Beach in San Diego. It’s one of the first official leash-free beaches in the United States. Ocean Beach Dog Beach is located between the Mission Bay Channel and Ocean Beach Park. It abuts the Pacific Ocean on the west and the San Diego River on the east. Dogs are welcome year-round and can be off-leash at all hours.

Fiesta Island is situated in the heart of Mission Bay. Last year, it was recognized by USA Today as the best dog park in the United States due to its scenic natural landscape and breathtaking views. It offers a sprawling leash-optional area where our furry friends can frolic.

At Coronado’s Dog Beach, pooches can play leash-free year-round. It’s located adjacent to Sunset Park near the North Island U.S. Naval Station. The beach boasts great views of the Point Loma coastline and the iconic Hotel del Coronado.

Our favorite puppy playground is Del Mar Dog Beach. During the summer, dogs must be leashed except early morning. After Labor Day, canines can romp around untethered. Del Mar Dog Beach is a half-mile stretch of beach with silky white sand across the road from the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Majestic sandstone bluffs rise above the beach on the north. The San Dieguito River flows along the south side and empties into the sparkling blue Pacific Ocean, which abuts the western edge. The scenic coastal haven is a popular playground for our four-footed friends…and the setting for one of the scenes in the book I am currently writing.
