Fact or Fiction

Some of the stories posted online about dating disasters are so outlandish that I question their veracity. Did the scenario really play out as described or is the post pure fabrication? Fact or fiction? A few examples are paraphrased below.

One [un]lucky lady went on a first (and last) date at night in the Seaport District in Boston. The sun had set, the sky was dark, and the street lights were spaced far apart. She wore a long black summer dress. As they passed through a dark stretch of the walkway, he casually mentioned that if he pushed her into the water, no one would notice. When he asked to see her again, there was no second guessing that hard no.

Another woman said that she had matched with someone on a dating app. He messaged her persistently but seemed like a nice guy, so she agreed to a date. Dinner went fine, aside from him being extremely nervous and visibly sweating. However, as he drove her home, he professed his love for her and begged to go to her room. When they arrived at her building, she swiftly darted inside the front entrance, which locked behind her. Her date stood outside and screamed, “I love you, please let me in!” She ignored his pleas and blocked him immediately.

A man said that he met a girl on Tinder. She was very chatty and flirty online, but short and curt in person. She arrived 30 minutes late and was more interested in texting on her phone than conversing with him. After confirming that he was paying for the meal, she proceeded to order the most expensive items on the menu. After fruitlessly struggling to start a conversation with her, he peered over at the screen on her phone—she was on Tinder messaging other guys…right in front of him…during their date.

The posted stories describe a possible psychopath, a potential stalker, and a definite narcissist. I’m not sure if they are real-life incidents. You never know. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.
