My husband and I have four married children and eleven grandchildren (so far). Our youngest son is the only child who resides in San Diego. Last summer, he married a classmate he’s known since kindergarten. We are fortunate the newlyweds live close by. Unfortunately, the older three kids (and my grandkids) live far away. So, I rack up a lot of frequent flyer miles and wear out the tread on my tires traveling to them. And it’s worth every mile.
I enjoy the one-on-one time with each family. But we also try to get everyone together during the summer and holidays. I love to listen to the banter between the cousins and watch them create fun family memories. However, with over twenty people under one roof, it’s total chaos. My usually neat and orderly house looks like the aftermath of a tornado. And finding a sleeping spot for everyone is a bit like a game of Tetris.
A friend asked what we feed the masses. I have a lot of good recipes squirreled away in my kitchen cupboards. But they usually dine on Costco food and take-out and shortcut recipes—like their childhood. The main character in my book is modeled after my own experience as a busy working mother, juggling my legal career and parenthood and resorting to quick and easy recipes. The kids had fun molding Rice Krispie treats into stars and decorating them with patriotic sprinkles. I included the recipe for the treats in one of my books. It was a staple in our household. Only three minutes to make. An edible craft—great for multitasking moms.
All my kiddos were in town recently. It’s either feast or famine. All or nothing. My home is either bustling with activity and bursting at the seams…or bleak and barren. My rambunctious visitors have all departed and order has been restored. But it’s way too quiet now. Thank goodness for FaceTime!
