The Fourth of July is only days away and I can’t wait. I always look forward to Independence Day – friends, family, food, and fireworks. A winning combination. Whether you attend a block party or just chill at home, the grand finale of the festivities is the same: the fireworks.

I grew up in Southern California. During my childhood (a.k.a. the olden days), we were allowed to purchase our own fireworks. We’d set them off in the street in front of our house or the patio in our backyard. I vividly recall my wonder and excitement as I watched the sparkling spray of a fountain or danced and drew in the sky with a sparkler. And I remember my father’s teasing explanation of the source of the shrill screech emitted by the Piccolo Pete: a tiny gnome encased inside whose bottom was being burned. Dad jokes. They’ve been around forever and have not improved over time.
Unfortunately, the days of lighting your own fireworks are long gone in San Diego due to fire and safety concerns. Luckily, there are pyrotechnic displays throughout the county. The Big Bay Boom is billed as the largest fireworks show in California. Fireworks are launched from four barges on the San Diego Bay. The San Diego County Fair hosts a “Fireworks Spectacular” every year. Legoland advertises a “Red, White, & BOOM!” star-spangled celebration that ends with fireworks that turn into 3D LEGO® bricks. Sea World offers the “Enchanted Wonders Fireworks” display and a laser show nightly during the summer. There are many other community and commercial events offering fun family activities – be sure to check them out!
I’m looking forward to creating star-shaped Jello jigglers and rice Krispie treats with my grandkids and watching the dazzling display of lights in the inky black night sky. Independence Day fills me with pride and patriotism…and gratitude to our founding fathers and those who have served in the military. I greatly appreciate their courage and sacrifice. Freedom is never truly free.
