Wonderful Tonight

Never underestimate the power of a timeless melody. Music can fill your heart and touch your soul. Sometimes a song functions as a time machine, triggering sweet memories from the past.

My husband and I both play the piano, and we provided the opportunity for our children to learn to play as well. Only they didn’t see it as a “golden opportunity” – more like parental torture. Piano practice was frequently accompanied by a side of whining. I served as the human metronome. It often was a real slog. As an interesting twist, when they became adults, one of my kids asked me why I didn’t make them practice more… They didn’t gain an appreciation for the value of those musical skills until later in life.

We recently attended an Eric Clapton concert. It was a double date with our son and his wife, both talented pianists. My husband and son also play the guitar. We enjoyed seeing the talented musicians make their instruments come alive. Their techniques and fingering were fun to watch. We were swiftly transported back in time as we listened to the rhythmic strumming and melodic voices.

The concert was held at the Pechanga Arena San Diego, formerly known as the San Diego Sports Arena. It is located in the heart of San Diego, adjacent to Kobey’s Swap Meet and close to Phil’s BBQ (a couple of other well-known local landmarks). The Pechanga Arena is a relatively small venue, with a seating capacity of 14,000. According to their website, it is consistently rated as the #1 facility in California for their size.

An oft-repeated old adage states: “Music soothes the savage beast.” I think there is some truth to that statement. I’ve discovered that music can smooth out the rough edges of a bad day. It can be a healing balm and instill a sense of peace.
