Holiday Rom-Com Tropes

Holiday romantic comedies are my not-so-secret indulgence. The movies are admittedly predictable, but the anticipation and familiarity provide a degree of comfort and satisfaction. And the inevitable happy endings lift my spirits and warm my heart. The seasonal films have become a popular holiday tradition in many households, not just mine.

Hallmark has long been my go-to for lighthearted holiday romances. But many other networks have gotten into the game and produced their own versions of the genre. Most of the films incorporate similar tropes and gimmicks. Some movies feature former child stars or famous singers. Others are set in foreign countries or other scenic settings. A few include a storyline peppered with musical performances and dancing scenes. And, of course, there are always a couple of flicks with royalty falling in love with a commoner – castles, upper crust society, high fashion, and fancy balls. There is something for everyone.

By definition, romantic comedies include humor. Consequently, many of the movies contain relationship miscues and dating disasters as a source of mirth. There is a “meet-ugly” instead of a meet-cute. Cases of mistaken identity. Miscommunications and misunderstandings. Matchmaking and meddling. An ex-boyfriend or girlfriend often crops up at the most inopportune moment. A former nemesis becomes engaged to a friend or sibling. And, the old standby, Romeo and Juliet scenarios.

A common story arc is enemies to frenemies to friends. The road to wedded bliss is never smooth. There are lots of big bumps and sidesteps. Dogs, cats, and other pets often serve as romantic catalysts to help propel forward momentum. The storylines, twists, and turns may vary, but the endings are always a satisfying “happily ever after.”

After a busy day, I look forward to pampering myself with some popcorn and a heartwarming holiday rom-com. I can laugh at the dating disasters and missteps knowing that it will all turn out okay in the end. It sparks eternal hope that, despite the ups and downs as we travel along the road of life, the journey will turn out okay.
