For me, the best part of the holidays is the chance to gather together with friends and family. Don’t get me wrong, I love the food and festive décor, but those are just the trappings, they don’t open the door to my heart. People are the key.
We all lead busy lives, and it can be hard to carve out the time and coordinate schedules. The lyrics in the “Cat’s in the Cradle” song by Harry Chapin remind us not to get caught up in the minutiae of daily living as the seasons of life roll along or we might miss out on what matters most. During the holidays, we take the time to attend family dinners and neighborhood parties. We reconnect and revitalize our friendships and family relationships – and, in the process, replenish our spirits.
I look forward to the arrival of my children and grandchildren. It’s mass chaos when they’re here, and we’re totally exhausted when they depart. But it’s well worth it. Their visits always warm my heart.
Some people have a found or chosen family rather than a biological family – a group of people who aren’t related by blood but care for each other like family. Familial bonds come in all forms. Families come in all shapes and sizes. They all provide love and support.
My father is Jewish, and my mother is Christian. I was taught to respect all religions. Whatever your faith or religious belief, may your home be filled with love and laughter this holiday season and your heart overflow with joy.
